Authenticate your domain in Mailgun
Short answer
In Mailgun, open Sending, then Domains, and click Add New Domain. Enter the domain of the email address you send from, choose the EU or US region and click Add Domain. Add the SPF, DKIM and tracking records Mailgun shows at your DNS provider, then check the status in Mailgun until the domain is verified. Mailgun only sends from a verified domain.
Before you begin
You need a Mailgun account on the Foundation 100k plan and access to your domain’s DNS settings, usually at the company where you bought the domain or in Cloudflare. If you do not have Mailgun yet, see Create a Mailgun account for LeadJabber.
Which domain to add
Add the domain of the email address you send from in LeadJabber. If you send from anna@yourdomain.com, add yourdomain.com. You can use your main business domain. Mailgun suggests a subdomain such as mail.yourdomain.com. Only use a subdomain if your sender address is on it. Mailgun only sends for domains that are verified in your account, and emails from an address on another domain are not delivered.
Choose the region
Mailgun asks you to choose a region, US or EU, when you add the domain. Both work with LeadJabber, which detects the region automatically. If your company and most of your contacts are in Europe, choose EU.
Steps
-
Log in to Mailgun. In the left menu, open Sending and click Domains.
-
Click Add New Domain.
-
Enter your domain, for example yourdomain.com, and check the spelling. Choose the region and click Add Domain.
-
Mailgun shows the DNS records to add. Keep this page open.
-
At your DNS provider, create the SPF, DKIM and tracking records exactly as shown, with the record type Mailgun shows. See the sections below before you add MX records.
-
Back in Mailgun, open Sending, Domain settings and the DNS records tab. Make sure your domain is selected and click Check status.
-
When the records are found, the domain shows as verified. Mailgun also emails you when this happens. DNS changes can take up to 24 to 48 hours, but usually much less.
Which records you need
Mailgun needs two records to send from your domain: one TXT record for SPF and one record for DKIM. Also add the tracking record, a CNAME. LeadJabber uses the open and click tracking in Mailgun, and Mailgun needs this record for tracking to work.
Do not add Mailgun’s MX records if you receive email on the domain somewhere else, for example in Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. MX records decide where incoming email goes, and adding Mailgun’s would stop email from reaching your mailbox. LeadJabber does not need them.
If the domain already has an SPF record
A domain can only have one SPF record. If yours already has one, do not add a second. Add include:mailgun.org to the existing record, after v=spf1 and before ~all, for example v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:mailgun.org ~all.
Entering the records correctly
Many DNS providers add your domain automatically, so enter only the first part of each name in the host field. Pasting the full name can create a record like mx._domainkey.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com that Mailgun cannot find. For a record on the domain itself, most providers accept @ as the host. If you use Cloudflare, set every Mailgun record to DNS only (grey cloud).
Also add a DMARC record
Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft expect domains that send in volume to have a DMARC record. If your domain does not have one, add a TXT record named _dmarc with a value such as v=DMARC1; p=none; as a starting point. Read more in What are SPF, DKIM and DMARC?
Next step
With the domain verified, link your dedicated IP address to the domain and check that automatic warm-up is on. See Create a Mailgun account for LeadJabber. When your API key is added, LeadJabber can send from your domain.
When to contact support
Contact us if the records look correct and verification still fails after 24 hours. Email support@leadjabber.com with your domain name and a screenshot of the records at your DNS provider.
